The heated solarium or glass roof
They require a perfectly stable foundation against frost. This type of construction is in fact an extension of the house and will be considered as such by your municipality when applying for a building permit. To be comfortable in winter and not become an excessive energy expenditure, heated solariums and canopies should not be too large and they should use very high energy efficiency glass. The structure must be well insulated and equipped with a thermal break between the interior and exterior to prevent the formation of frost on the structure. In this case, the floor must be extremely well insulated, generally with sprayed urethane to prevent any air infiltration and any thermal bridge in the structure of the floor. If the floor is ceramic or stone, it is strongly recommended to heat it with a radiant electric system so that it is comfortable for the feet. Its price goes beyond $250 per square foot installation included. To insulate a floor on stilts, simply put rot-proof insulation, for example rock wool, between the joists and retain the insulation with a mesh, an air barrier (be careful not to put a vapor barrier !) or even rigid insulating panels. For increased energy efficiency and to prevent the entry of rodents, close the vacuum belt under the solarium. To do this, build a structure with wooden or steel posts and extend the siding. It is desirable to insulate the belt with rigid panels, in addition to the floor. Do not forget to orient this space South ±20°. It must be well insulated and thermal bridges must be avoided so that the solarium does not cool the house in winter. If possible, they should cover two levels of the house to be more effective. The roof must also be well insulated. The glazing must be efficient, double with argon filling (which will remain in place for ten years). The construction is an extension of the house, so a wall is removed to allow circulation from one room to another.
