Our next installment “How to improve your bedroom”. I've actually been thinking about my bedroom a lot lately, although it's probably the last room on my "To do" list. I think a lot of people tend to put the design of their bedroom on the back burner because it's primarily where we sleep and it's not a room that typically gets a lot of foot traffic. guests. If they do, phrases like "I'm so sorry, it's such a waste" or "Please don't judge it, I haven't finished decorating it yet" come out of our mouths. Well, we deserve better, right? We should have a room that, when we enter, we are immediately greeted with a feeling of calm. So let's look at the 10 tips from our < strong>interior designer to achieve this.
1. Add a throw (colorful or patterned)
Just to be clear, this is not your average comforter or duvet. The throw is smaller, we like to style them as the top layer at the foot of a bed. They make your bed more welcoming, comfortable and provide an extra layer for cool nights.

Here we have two different options both neutral and textured. I love that in the bedroom of the mountain house (left image), the green blanket makes a nice bold contrast to the greige bedding. Next (right image), the cream knit bed cover complements the rest of the bedding but its visual texture adds so much. Plus, it looks comfortable, right?!

But maybe you are a fan of symmetrical patterns, here are two excellent examples. In the bedroom on the left, we opted for this superb embroidered blanket. The pattern is bold but the colors are softer and work perfectly with the overall color palette and mood of the room. Then, in the one on the right, we used a blanket with alternating patterns. It adds another layer of relief that breaks up the plain blue quilt underneath. Overall, throws add a ton of personality to these pieces.
2. Consider the long pillow
We've been loving this bedding tip for years! We all prefer a bedding setup that only takes a minute to create, let alone destroy. So if you spend more time than you'd like with your decorative pillows, then this is the one for you. Let's make our lives easier and a little more modern with the only decorative long lumbar cushion.

Look at this bed and tell me your stress level from making the bed hasn't dropped by half. Simple tip that can really translate to any style.

In terms of rules for mixing colors and textures, it's always the same. Keep it within the color palette of the room, then decide whether you want to play with a contrasting or complementary color to the bedding. Then you can decide if you prefer a pattern or a solid color with a fun texture like we did with this faux leather lumbar.
3. Choose the right size rug
Do you think we wouldn't talk about that again? We did it because, again, it's important. Here's our mostly official bedroom rug size rule: Ideally, your rug should exceed at least 24 inches on all three sides of your bed. Our typical sizing rules are: for a twin bed, go for a 5'x8', a double 6'x9', a queen 8'x10' and a king 9'x12'.
But of course you also need to consider the size of your room. This is why I'm a huge fan of masking tape, it allows me to preview items in the space before purchasing them, like rugs.

We like the rugs to be wider because you don't want most of your beautiful rug hiding under the bed. We recommend placing at least half if not two thirds under the bed. This way, when you get out of bed, your feet land on the carpet and not on the cold floor.

If you plan to have a bench at the end of your bed, make sure your rug is large enough to fit under all four legs of the bench with some space in front, at least 12″. I promise that getting the right size rug will make your room well-designed and easier on the eyes.
4. Find a functional nightstand

Free-standing bedside tables have the merit of being stylish and elegant. But you know what they are not? Functional. Most of us are “collectors”. Collectors of hair ties, books, magazines, electronics, and if you don't have at least one drawer, you will have a bedside table full of clutter. None of us want that.
5. Don't forget the window covering
You might be thinking, “Everyone has window treatments in their bedroom.”
Oh no! Unfortunately this is not always the case. Be careful here, if you are just switching out the metal or plastic blinds that came with your rental or purchase or if you simply haven't had the time to choose a window covering due to lack of time, then this is THE sign that the situation must be remedied. Adding curtains radically transforms the room. All of a sudden, it became more spacious and so much more comfortable. They are SUCH a game changer in the room.

However, curtains are not the only option. Roman shades are such a lovely way to give you privacy, add texture (and pattern if you like) but be a little less visually heavy than a curtain.
Remember that if you want blackout blinds, they will need to be lined and there will probably still be some "light leakage". on the sides if you install them 'inside frame'. Food for thought if you're a night owl!
So yes, curtains bring a little more 'drama', but they are also much more affordable to buy if you want to be more budget conscious.
6. Provide two different light sources
(Warm light ideally)
Lighting is very important for ambiance and you will want to have at least two options to be able to create the ambiance you want. Also, dimmers! Install them if you don't have them (and make sure your fixtures and bulbs are dimmer compatible).
So when I say two light sources, I'm talking about a pendant and a bedside lamp, or a floor lamp and a ceiling lamp, or a pendant and a wall lamp, etc. Of course, if you want more, get more! But something I would highly recommend is that the majority of them are "warm". This means the type of bulb. To avoid a "bright white" or a "cold white" because they are normally very hard. This also means that this light must be filtered by some sort of shade or covering.

Example above: Two table lamps on bedside tables with white shades for a nice glow near the bed, a floor lamp with a large white shade for a nice glow near the seating area and a large chandelier. Lots of options to serve whatever mood you might be in!
7. A mirror to reflect light
So easy and effective. This will make your room look bigger, brighter, and can be really helpful when you need to check that face or outfit before you go. Plus, there are many ways to decorate them!

Let's talk about the full-length mirror first. It's not only beautiful and functional, but having a large-scale "artwork" like this will help add dimension to your space. To free up floor space, you can hang it on your wall or simply tilt it if space is less important. If you lean it, make sure you secure it. Accidents happen and a broken mirror and/or person would be a very big disappointment.

Maybe you don't have space or just want something smaller. Great! Hang a wall mirror above a dresser (or lean it over), do something fun and hang one in front of a shelf. It's essentially functional art.
8. A place to sit is really nice
This one is definitely a luxury. . For those of you lucky enough to have a little extra space to maybe have a reading chair or a bench to sit on to tie your shoes, let's do it!

Let's start with the benches first, as many of them can also be used as additional storage (YES!). You can position your bench at the end of your bed (remember the rule regarding the carpet). Now, if you're a little tight, you can create a bench seat on an empty wall, giving you a place to sit and store your things. So yes, bedroom benches were not always at the foot of the bed.

My other ultimate bedroom seat is a plush reading chair. I had one in high school and it was the best. The corners of the bedroom are made for reading nooks, so just make sure the chair is comfortable and the comfort will be overwhelming.
9. Plants are important

Plants enhance every space. We are big fans of trees and don't turn our noses up at fakes. So whichever type you prefer, go treat yourself if you can. They bring life and happiness. A little nature is good for the soul. Plus, they look great as you can see in this photo. But if a tree isn't possible due to space or budget, a small plant is just as wonderful. Choose a pretty planter and I promise this little element will make you and your room feel better.
10. Yes, a candle!
Heat, light and good smells. It's extremely simple but can completely change the look of your room, here bedroom.

Candles and even reed diffusers are the superstars of “cozy” for me. Of course, be careful and if you read in bed, maybe set an alarm to make sure you don't sleep with it burning all night.
