Rustic Scandinavian cottage plan on piers with mezzanine
This rustic Scandinavian cottage plan, designed for construction on piers, features a welcoming architectural style that blends the simplicity of Nordic design with the authentic character of wood. With 1,845 sq. ft. of living space, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a mezzanine open to the ground floor, this model offers spacious interiors while maintaining a relatively compact 30' x 40' footprint.
Its steeply pitched gable roof, wood-look siding, and covered porches give it a profile perfectly suited to a wooded or vacation setting. The absence of a basement or garage allows the design to focus on living areas and the connection between the cottage and its surroundings.
Warm, rustic Scandinavian architecture
The exterior of this rustic Scandinavian cottage is defined by a simple form dominated by a steep metal roof. The warm-toned siding contrasts with the dark roofing and light-colored trim, creating a balanced composition inspired by both Nordic architecture and the traditional cottage style.
The front façade features a 24' x 10' covered porch, creating a sheltered transition between indoors and outdoors. Large windows beneath the gable mirror the height of the interior space, allowing abundant natural light to fill the living room.
A functional, open-concept ground floor
The ground floor is organized around a large, open-concept living area that combines the living room, dining room, and kitchen. The kitchen—measuring approximately 12' 10" x 9' 10"—includes a central island that expands prep space and facilitates interaction with the rest of the living area. The living area—measuring approximately 12' 6" x 13' 6"—benefits directly from the open volume extending up to the mezzanine. This layout creates impressive ceiling height and enhances the sense of spaciousness, despite the building's modest footprint.
A first bedroom (12' 8" x 16' 8") is located on the ground floor. It is accompanied by a full bathroom and a separate laundry area equipped with a washer and dryer. A central mechanical room completes the technical layout of this level.
A mezzanine featuring the master suite
Upstairs, the design makes full use of the volume created beneath the roofline. A significant portion of this level remains open to the ground floor, preserving the architectural character of the cathedral ceiling.
The mezzanine houses the master bedroom (approximately 10' 9" x 13' 1") and a second full bathroom. The latter includes both a bathtub and a separate shower, offering a particularly comfortable setup for the occupants of the upper level. The bedroom also provides access to a 14' x 5' rear deck, adding a more private outdoor space upstairs.
A 1,845 sq. ft. cottage without a basement
This model does not include a basement or a walk-out lower level. Its foundation—consisting of piles and a slab—is a particularly attractive feature for certain vacation home projects and sites where minimizing the excavation and construction work associated with conventional foundations is desired. Naturally, the final choice of foundation system must be validated based on soil conditions and project-specific requirements.
With a width of just 30 feet, this cottage maintains a relatively compact footprint while offering 1,845 sq. ft. of living space, thanks to its second level and mezzanine. A design created to fully embrace nature
With its two bedrooms, two bathrooms, mezzanine, covered porches, and open-concept living area, this plan is an excellent choice for a four-season cottage or a home set in a natural landscape. Its architecture prioritizes natural light, vertical space, and seamless flow rather than a multitude of enclosed rooms.
This rustic Scandinavian-style cottage plan—designed for construction on piles—is ideal for owners who appreciate the charm of a traditional wooden cabin but desire a more open interior layout and Nordic-inspired architecture.
The plans can also be customized to adjust dimensions, the interior layout, window placement, or various architectural elements to suit your specific site and needs.
